It was raining sideways today–the kind of rain umbrellas weren’t made for, when galoshes and slickers only succeeded in making you less wet. There was flooding and high water in various spots in the city, closing highways, creating rivers out of thoroughfares. Traffic lights became inoperable when power lines were snagged by airborne debris, which led to exercises in driving courtesy. All the channels provided full coverage of today’s nasty weather, sensationalizing every raindrop to sound like a threatening hurricane. There were footage of immersed vehicles, and people being rescued on inflatable rafts, and able-bodied men passing sandbags.
Give me a break.
I remember last year when Portland welcomed its first snowfall. It measured mere centimeters but received full coverage. The hype died down as the snow melted. Then, when no one was looking, we were hit by a “freak snowstorm” that effectively almost shut down the city. I wonder if this over-sensationalized rainfall is a precursor to something much worse.
I guess we’ll see.
