I think I’m writing this entry with somewhat therapeutic intentions, preparing myself for the possible worst outcome concerning my beloved laptop. Some of you already know that Toshi (that’s what I now call my sick laptop) went kaput last Friday. In brief, it gave me an error message saying some .dll file was missing and that reinstalling the software (in this case, it was Microsoft XP Home Edition) “may” fix the problem. I took it to two (2) GeekSquad locations and they told me pretty much the same thing. So, I made the attempt but to no avail. Toshi wouldn’t even activate the CD-ROM drive. Dejected, I took Toshi to GeekSquad again and surrendered it to their care. They’re going to “attempt” a data backup of my work files, before “attempting” to fix the problem. Even after shelling out $300 USD in GeekSquad fees, I still felt like I have already lost my work files– which included nearly 300 invaluable work-related digital pictures that I’d taken while in Atlanta– and (gulp) that I have also lost Toshi as well.
Of course, I am hoping for the best, that I’m going to be contacted by the miracle workers at GeekSquad in 7 to 10 days with the great news that everything is A-OK, and that Toshi and my work files will be coming home to me soon. But I’m also preparing myself for the worst. Sigh…
when thihs happened to me a year ago, i usesd it as an opportunity to get off windows. i got a free OS cd from ubuntu, loaded it right onto my old machine, and presto had a new computer. glad i did and will never go back to windows. of course this doesn’t help with your old files . . . .
