Shamrock Run

In about a week, I will be participating in the 8k race of the 2008 Shamrock Run. There are normally over 10,000 runners who join this annual “fun run,” which starts and ends at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park after meandering through the streets of downtown Portland, Oregon.

Although I’d kept up with my running on the treadmill since January, today was the first time that I’d run outdoors. And it was brutal. It was around 40 degrees and drizzly outside when I ran a 5k distance this morning. I had a bit of trouble regulating my breathing until after the first kilometer or so. Running on pavement is very different from running on the controlled environment and surface of a treadmill that I nearly tripped several times. I just have to commit to running outdoors everyday this week in order to prepare myself for the run next Sunday. Wish me luck!
