Pho Sho!

I’ve been on a pho kick lately, thanks somewhat to Li’l Bro who’s been chatting it up about this tasty Vietnamese soup for ages and finally got me to join him for a bowl several weeks ago.  But it’s in large part because of Pho Dalat — an unassuming restaurant on the corner of 39th and Main in Southeast Portland (Oregon) — that I’m now hooked on this delicious rice-noodle soup.

Pho Dalat was actually recommended by a Vietnamese acquaintance of the family’s and boy was he right!  The menu is quite extensive, with their pho available in nearly twenty different varieties, which includes (in spite of the beef stock for the broth) a “vegetarian” version.  Pronounced ‘fuh,’ this rice-noodle dish is a staple among Vietnamese-Thai restaurants but it clearly takes center stage at Pho Dalat.  In addition to pho, however, is a bevy of other tasty treats from vermicelli bowls to rice dishes.  Also, their salad rolls are killer!

Plus, at the end of the meal (at least, during the lunch service), instead of the tired fortune cookie, you are treated to a tapioca custard-like dessert as a fitting finishing touch.

Now, if they would only pay attention to the condition of their restrooms…

Nevertheless, if you’re ever in P-Town and want to reward your palate with authentic pho, make sure to check out Pho Dalat.  You won’t regret it.
